The Generous Gospel and Giving
Honor the Lord from your wealth And from the first of all your produce; So your barns will be filled with plenty And your vats will overflow with new wine. Proverbs 3:9–10
The prosperity gospel is a heresy. Its a belief that asserts if you show displays of faith, then God will always reward you with money. But this isn’t true because the hall of faith in Hebrews some of those who have tremendous faith experience mockery, imprisonment, and martyrdom (11:36-38)
Some have sought to combat the prosperity Gospel with the poverty gospel. These guys believe that material excess is sinful and poverty is next to godliness. But this can’t be true either because verse 10 in this passage says your barns will be filled with plenty and your wine vats will overflow. That sounds like excess of riches to me.
Instead, let’s believe the Generous gospel. God is good. Therefore, he deserves the best of our wealth and earnings. But, because God is good, He also loves to give good gifts—like wealth and earnings. You honor God for being generous, and because He’s so generous, He gives you more.
But let’s not grow weary in doing good.
