Exhortation Not to Forget

My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments; For length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you. Proverbs 3:1–2

Each day God blesses is a day we must remember not to forget. You see blessing can become a curse. A man who worked his way from the bottom all the way to the top can forget all the lessons of humility he learned. An older woman can forget all the work, attention, and love her husband has shown her and fall for the attention of a younger man. People forget. But when sinful people forget, we always forget the good stuff we shouldn't forget—like blessing comes from the Lord.

The Lord promises to bless those who work hard and diligently work. And as Proverbs 3 shows us, He blesses with long age and peace. But here’s a problem with age and peace—they make you soft. Because we are sinners, we get lazy with blessing. We can become comfortable and forgetful as we get older. So, the more God blesses us with wealth and age, the more we’re tempted to forget. God blesses us with the very things that our sinful nature uses to forget God and His blessings. The only way out of this cycle of blessing-to-cursing is to remember the hand that gives blessings is also the same hand that takes curses.

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”— in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Galatians 3:13–14

Don’t forget.
