A True and Kind Christmas Exhortation
Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good repute In the sight of God and man. Proverbs 3:3–4
If Christmas is a time for anything it should be a time of kindness. Our king came down to earth to live like us and for us and with us. All He demands is for us to go and do likewise. Jesus didn’t separate kindness from truth.
If you separate kindness from truth you are left with neither. Nice guys without the spine of truth aren’t kind to those who need their protection. When a husband and wife are mugged one evening, “come on guys. You’re better than this” he is not kind because he is not true to his wedding vows. Also, when truth exists without kindness, it remains constant and unnoticed like a monument. But reading “God is love” on a stone marker doesn't convey the meaning as much as a man bleeding for his bride.
In Jesus, divinity and humanity meet forever without corrupting either. Divine nature and human nature together in one person. This mystery cripples the minds of our greatest scholars and reveals to us the secret of applying Proverbs 3. Also in Christ does kindness and truth meet without corruption. In Christ, we can live kind and honest lives without corrupting either. In Christ, we no longer have the excuse of being a nice coward or a heartless truth-teller.
This Christmas bind kindness and truth around your neck so all can say. When you say “merry Christmas” mean it.
